National Pilgrimage 2017 to welcome Preacher to the Papal Household after 40 Hours of Prayer
Final preparations are now being made for the 2017 National Pilgrimage to the Anglican Shrine of our Lady of Walsingham later this month (Monday 29 May).
The Shrine, in Norfolk, is known as ‘England's Nazareth’. It is visited every year by thousands of pilgrims, tourists and visitors from all over the world.
Priest Administrator, Fr Kevin Smith, said today: "We are greatly honoured this year to be welcoming a distinguished visiting preacher as well as organising a 40 hour prayer vigil before the National in support of the Archbishop of Canterbury's International call to prayer, Thy Kingdom Come.”
Fr Raniero Cantalamessa OFM Cap. Preacher to the Papal Household will preach at this year's National. He is an internationally renowned preacher and author. Since 1980 he has served Pope S. John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI and now Pope Francis as Preacher to the Papal Household.
In this capacity, he preaches a weekly sermon in Advent and Lent in the presence of the Pope and his Cardinals, the Bishops and Prelates of the Roman Curia and the General Superiors of the Religious Orders.
In 2015, he was invited by the Archbishop of Canterbury to preach at the Opening Eucharist of General Synod in Westminster Abbey.There will be a procession through the Norfolk village from the Shrine Church to the Abbey Grounds in Walsingham at midday followed by Mass. After a picnic lunch, pilgrims will listen to the address.
